It’s perhaps inevitable that two figures loom large over Madam Secretary, Tea Leoni’s new fall series for CBS in which she plays a retired CIA operative, wife and mother of two, pressed into political service when the Secretary of State unexpectedly dies. The actress told the HFPA she is a strong admirer of two actual past Secretaries of State: Madeleine Albright and Hillary Clinton, women that like the character she plays are strong female role models as well as experienced politicians. Barbara Hall’s new network series is not the first one set on the backdrop of backroom politics as viewers of shows like The West Wing and House of Cards will appreciate. We spoke to Tea Leoni about why this series chooses to take a less jaded view of political doings than its celebrated predecessors, focusing on the officials’ private lives, the side that is usually shielded from our view.
